I have a Dell Latitude d600 laptop running XP pro. I am trying to use a cable to connect to my cars computer, so I can scan my cars computer. I know for a fact the cable is good, because I tested it with my home pc and it checks good. I hook it up to the serial port on my laptop, and the cable can't communicate. So far I have changed comm ports in the bios, deleted them in the bios, and added them back. Nothing works. Under device manager on the laptop, it says my comm port is ok, no errors. I am confused. Please any advice.

G'day,
It could be any number of things, but one thing you should make sure of is the type of cable required. Computer to computer communications is done with crossover (or null modem ) cables because both connectors are the same (DTE to DTE). You would also need to know the exact baud rate and format of the bytes. If you do have the correct type of cable, you will then need to know the protocol between your computer and car. I assume that you have some kind of software to do this? You could use a terminal programme (ie hyperterminal)to send the commands to the car computer and see what comes back. regards, Elric
