I bought my Dell Dimension 2400 with new cd and dvd drives that are different from the original. The guy I bought it from reformatted it to the original windows xp home operating system. It says the secondary drive 0 and 1 are not found. They open but they won't read anything. It is something to do with when you like set the thing so slave or whatever? I have tried everything!

Check the boot screen, or in the BIOS, to see if the drives are listed, if not then open the case to see if the data cable is connected - the power cable obviously is as they are opening. If the cable is attached then it may be the jumpers, as you mention - most optical drives come set as slaves, so you do need one set to master if they are on the same cable.
