Solved Second screen not being recognized in Safe Mode (Windows XP)

May 9, 2013 at 10:33:51
Specs: Windows xp
I have a virus on my computer - Acer Aspire 6930 - so I am booting it into Safe Mode to be able to get to my files.

Unfortunately, my laptop screen is broken (it's cracked, i.e. I can still kind of see what I am doing by moving the windows around to visible areas but most of the screen is a mess) so I have hooked up a second monitor. Problem is, the monitor is not being recognized. I have already browsed the site and on the surface, some people seemed to have the same problem.

The difference is that their computer at least recognized the second monitor and it was just a matter of activating it. My laptop doesn't even recognize the monitor. When I go to display preferences where I could usually select the second screen, it doesn't even appear in the drop down menu.

Anybody know what to do?

It's isn't possible to use a second monitor in Safe Mode because in that mode only the basic Microsoft VGA driver is loaded instead of the manufacturer's graphics driver.
The basic Microsoft VGA driver does not support two monitors.

Did you try Fn + F5?

Yes, that's kind of obvious. It only works when the secondary screen is already detected. If the screen isn't detected, fn + f5, i.e. swapping screens, won't work.

"Yes, that's kind of obvious"

No it's not because you didn't state that you tried it.
