I've always considered Seagate hard drives to be the best with Western Digital to be a close second. But if your goal is to get rid of PC noise, you may want to look into a noise reduction drive adapter that goes into goes into a 5.25" drive bay and your hard drive goes inside. The mounting screws holes have rubber dampers to absorb vibration from the hard drive.

I think Seagates are pretty quiet... but to me the most important hard drive spec is the warranty.

I have used both as they are installed into two seperate pc's. Western digital happens to be my #1 choice, reason being some bios's I have encountered over the years " OLd 486 "pcs, and before do not detect Seagate as well unlesss you install the drive bios translation programs. Thus lowering your available memory in dos. I have used both with XP lately, and Seagate seems to run much quieter, hope this helps.

If your seeking speed I would choose WD, and they have a good tech support site as well. I believe they have Bios software available now as well, both companies are really good, but if your seeking a cheaper medium generally speaking you can find Maxtor drive with much larger partition spaces. I have had free replacements with them.

In general I have found that WD is most expensive drive, folling Seagate, then Maxtor. You may wish to wait I have read of newer drives exceeding 400GBs not using RAID or SCSI and most importantly not costing much over 150 dollars. :) Good luck in choosing which one will work for you.

Not related to above, but usefull info...
A second trick I use to keep HD running for long time exceeding 15 years. Is install a quiet 4inch fan 60CFM/AC over top of the hard disk, they make minimal noise but in a compacted pc, can stop hard drives from overheating especially if you use dual drives that are stacked. I prefer AC myself, but you can use the power supply if you wish I run high end cards, so I dont try to suck more power out of my Power Supplies yes I use two of them in one server tower. LOL oh use common sense, two drives two fans or one mounted vertically in front or rear. Theres room lol, even if it doesnt look like it, I have made several home made brackets lately. Or you can use the Paper Rock Scissor methods lol Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor. LOL :) Goodluck

Sincerely,
Joe Christian

If you don't mind me asking, how effective is this, how expensive is this, and where would I be able to get one?
