Comment:

I had a 120GB SATA from Seagte on the PC I built (Asus A7V600-X). After about 6 months, the PC started freezing randomly (usually while playing games), then one day it just wouldn't boot. I replaced the data cable, no go, switched SATA slots on the mobo, no go. The drive was being seen by the controller (during boot), but it'd freeze afterwards. Certain utilities like fdisk also see the whole drive. It made a noise kind of like "tick... bzzzz... tick... bzzzz... tick... bzzzz... " but the PC was frozen.

Then I RMA'd the thing. The new drive from Seagate, after about 5 months, starts doing the EXACT SAME THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so pissed off now!!!

Questions:

1. Do I have another fried drive??

1. Is there a tool I can use to test the SATA HDs?? All I see on Seagate's site are tools for ATA, IDE, and SCSI drives.

3. Given the above symptoms, what else would you guys do to test it??

AMD Athlon XP 2700+
Asus A7V600-X
512 MB of PC3200 DDR RAM
GeForce FX 5200 256 MB
Seagate 120 GB SATA

If this drive is doing the same sounds it's dead, or it will die soon.

Having to failing drives in such a short time can mainly have 2 causes:

1. you are a very very unluky guy :)

2. a bad PSU

Check the voltages on the PSU. They should be in range +/- 5%

GooD LucK! with your next hard drive ;)

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice...
