I have an external hard disk Seagate 500GB. and suddenly it has an error.. i cannot access it.. it's not yet a year old.. still 8 months.. I was using it on Windows and suddenly while copying files, it stopped and says that there was an I/O error,.. I restarted my computer and the problem was fixed. a day later then the error happened again. This time even I tried it on my friend's linux laptop, it won't read... I really need those files...

If you couldn't mount it on Linux, it's a problem. Some people say to put it in the freezer for awhile. Others say that the freezer doesn't work. I'm not sure. I guess you could try it.

The world is full of rats, Republicans & Democrats.

Freezing a drive only works with certain kinds of problem, and I don't think this is one of them. This is a risky procedure and often only increases the damage.

All files of any importance need at least 1 backup copy, 2 or more backup copies if the files are of particular importance. There are many ways that data can be lost and you need to be prepared when (not if) something happens.

Data recovery is always hit or miss.

You MAY be able to access the drive if you remove it from the enclosure and connect it internally to a desktop unit or use a docking station. The housing may be the issue. That will void the warranty though. You may want to contact Seagate concerning this issue.
