|It's a bad plan to keep irreplaceable items on a hard disk. Hard disk are mechanical and all mechanical items eventually wear out. Clicking noises are not good.|
The clicking sound you hear is probably the head seek mechanism trying to find its way around the hard disk, either because it has failed or it is having trouble finding track 0 because the disks are not spinning properly. There is no going back once the mechanics of a hard disk fail.
You could try the freezer trick which means taking the disk out and putting it in the freezer inside a plastic bag for 24 hours. The cold could free up seized bearing just long enough to get the data of the hard disk. It sometimes works but not always, depends on what has actually failed.
Other than that it is spending a lot of money to get the data off with a commercial data recovery company.
