Comment:

I was wondering if anyone is aware of a device that will read an SD card on the USB port, that is seen as just another USB Flash drive.

Very similar to the thumbdrives and pendrives many of us use today, but mine is only 128mb. And I have a 512 MB SD card for my mp3 player, but I need softs to get the comp to read it. If I can get a reader that doesn't require soft and drivers, I can use it on a limited user Account on XP at school. Any help is MUCHO appreciated!

TIA

-Brian

All of the readers I've used haven't got a size limit - they are just readers after all & with XP you don't need drivers. Are you sure that part of the limited account isn't to stop large drives being added - I'd suggest putting the query to whoever maintains your school PCs before you spend any more money.

Driver for USB memory devices don't need any drivers with Windows XP - Windows XP has them built in. I haven't come across such a device yet that didn't work on XP straight out of the box.

All you need is an USB SD Card Reader of which there are many to chose from.

The reason I ask is because I have a Sony Memory Stick reader from PNY, and that requires drivers. I thought, merely thought, with my puny humanlike brain, that all readers need drivers with XP.. That was my original question, but I do appreciate your responses.

Do you know if, for example the PNY doesn't need drivers? Thanks again guys!

I don't know this particular item but at a guess it's not just drivers but software that's installed - possibly for proprietry formatting(?). Generally though, memory cards, including SD cards are purely a storage media - the readers are generic and are recognised as such under XP - same as your floppy drive/CD writer.

Thank you. I'll do some looking for unit, and perhaps I'll try to stay away from a PNY unit this time, knowing they require drivers.

Thanks again,

Brian

PNY doesn't require drivers for Windows ME, 2000, XP or MAC OS 9.0 and higher.

Again, mine did. And it wouldn't work until they were loaded.

Maybe I'm just special...

Thanks gang!
