Comment:

I am looking to replace one of the servers here and was thinking of building it myself, I just have a question about SCSI drives and what controller card do I need?, i'm going to have 2 36gb scsi drives so does the card need two ports or can the drives be daisy-chained? Also does the card just go into a PCI slot?, last question are there any cards that you can recommend.

Thanks

Ben

They can be daisy chained, but you have to make sure to give each drive it's own scsi ID. There is usually a utility on boot to do this, also there are jumpers on the drives to set scsi id.

Also, don't cheap out on the card. Get an Adaptec. I've been using them for years and they have never let me down. If this server is going to get heavy usage, get the Adaptec 29160 card. If you can't afford that one, get the Adaptec 19160 card.

The 39160's are also very good if you can afford it.

Also scsi channels have to be terminated. It's kinda tricky, so make sure that you do it right.

Newer SCSI devices do not require termination, and the advice on Adaptec cards is right on the money.
