Comment:

I have 3 10,000 RPM 18.2 GB wide ultra scsi 3 cheetah drives that I would like to put into an array.

I also have two controllers to choose from.

-A Mylex PCI Raid controller DAC960PL that is only wide ultra scsi 2 with dual channel, each channel supporting a maximum sustained transfer rate of 40MB/sec. But the controller has an intel 32 bit risc processor on it, and 4MB of read/write cache. In theory this controller maxes out at 80MB/sec transfer rate.

-An Adaptec ultra 160 single channel pci card that supports up to 160MB/sec on a single channel, but is not a raid controller. So I would have to use software raid which may not be an issue because my cpu is an AMD 2600.

I plan to use raid 0 for ultimate performance since I don't care about data integrity. But my question is, out of the two cards, which one do you think would yield me the greater real-world performance. The ultra 160 has the higher throughput capabilities and the latest technology to ensure it talks with each drive properly to negotiate appropriate transfer rates, but it has no risc processor and no raid controller so I will have to use Win2k's software raid. The Mylex is older technology, but has the advantage of the 4MB buffer, dual channel, and a 32 bit risc processor. I'm not sure which to go with and any help anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
-Caine
