scroll mouse locks up!

Hey All! I am having a problem with my scroll strip on the touch mouse pad on my laptop. It is an HP Pavilion dv6835nr Notebook. Every time I swipe the scroll pad to attempt to use the scroll mouse it locks up. I am not very familiar with the keyboard and I have no clue how to fix it. When the scroll strip is activated, instead of scrolling up and down the mouse locks up and the only way I can get it to go back to normal is to log off and log back on to resume with the normal cursor mouse. PLEASE HELP!!! IT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
