Hello, its me, the dude with the hard drive problems again, well i bought a new hard drive and guess what, the games still freeze every few seconds, so i know now that its not a hard drive problem. Maybe its a graphics problem? Does anyone know if the current ATI catalyst work with the old 64mb radeon 7000? Or do i need a previous version of ATI catalyst driver?
thanks in advanced
btw, im getting a new card soon, a 256 radeon 9550, but in the meantime, i would like to get this thing working fine.

The R7000 is a 64-bit card & only supports up to DX7, not to mention it only has 64MB memory. If you were having lag problems, why the heck would you buy a new HDD instead of a video card??? You're not gonna play modern games with that card no matter what you do. And the R9550 isn't a really great card either - I know, I have one, but I knew exactly what to expect. I'm not much of a gamer & don't care if I have to run at the lowest settings. Most gamers would find the R9550 to be unacceptable, so you might wanna reconsider your choice.

I wasnt sure what was the problem. I know the 9550 is not so great, but its enough for the games im intending to play. Theres no way im gonna spend 200+ bucks on a 512 mb xx2000whatever card for this aging computer. You didnt answer my question. Do you think then that I should install an earlier version of ati catalyst, and try to see if thats the problem? Plz, this is really pissing me off. I cant play my older games smoothly. q3a, serious sam first and second encounter, etc.

I thought I did answer your question. The R7000 is an outdated piece of crap. I never suggested you spend $200 on a card...but you might wanna consider spending more than $60.

You didn't provide very much info so it's difficult to answer your question(s). How about listing your system specs...board, CPU, RAM, etc. What HDD did you buy? I assume you did a fresh install of XP. Did you install the latest motherboard chipset drivers? Did you run Windows update & fully update XP? Are your BIOS settings tweaked for best performance?

the 9550 costs about $99, without tax. modern cards, like the ati x900 and the geforce 6600 or whatever its called, run for over $150. Well, its an old duron 900mhz, i bought a 160gb seagate hdd, its a mobo model 40kvm i think. I dunno about the mobo chipset drivers. Its got windows xp sp2, dunno about the bios settings either.

this aging computer with the POS card it has should be able to run old games like q3a smoothly, and it doesnt for some reason.

You obviously don't know much about your own system. The model number is wrong, you didn't say how much RAM you have, you don't know about BIOS settings, & you apparently didn't install the chipset drivers? And why did you put "CPU/Ram: P4 3Ghz" if your questions are about an 800 Duron? If you can come up with the proper model number for your board, I might be able to point you in the right direction. It's probably based on a VIA chipset..if so, you'd have to download & install the Hyperion 4in1 chipset drivers.

Do you live in the US? The ASUS 9550 128MB/128-bit AGP sells for under $60 at newegg.com. You do not need 256MB. The Radeon 9600XT sells for less than $90 & will kick the crap out of the 9550.

Yeah, I admit I dont know much about this system. The p4 is another computer i have. This computer has an amd duron 900mhz, its got 256 ram, everest says the motherboard model is Shuttle MK40V(N)chipset North bridge UniChrome KM400, dont know much about the BIOS.

Really? Im interested about the 9600XT, where can I get it for less than $90? at newegg? Is it 256mb? I would like to get a 256 mb card.

I just checked the specs of the 9600XT and it says it only has 128 mb. How can a card with 128 beat the crap out of a card that has 256? Please explain, since Im totally clueless, and I thought the more mb, the better.

whilst inferior graphics cards stutter on demanding 3d applications I once came accross a card that stopped for a few seconds now and then
I had 5 Geforce 2ti 64mb cards, all second user.
4 of them worked perfectly, one of them worked well some of the time but occasionally just 'stopped'. you would be playing a game and then maybe once each minute the image would stop for five seconds and then carry on, I did not have to restart computer or come out of the game or anything.
I tried different computer / drivers - same result.
This was definitely a fault in the graphics card itself.
Bear in mind I had 5 identical cards - 4 were fine - one did this - conclusive graphics card fault.
I wonder if yours is the same.

Re memory on graphics cards. Memory is not everything. eg. a 32mb Geforce2 mx400 will give a much better score on 3D Mark 2001 than a Radeon 7000 64mb. (both cards evolved in same era)
A 3000cc engine in a Porsche would give you a much faster ride than a 3000cc engine in a Ford car.

So, youre saying its a faulty graphics card then, the reason for the stuttering.

So, which ATI card (I think this computer only takes ATI cards) would you recommend for this aging computer. I would prefer if the card had 256mb. Checking at newegg.com, theres lotsa models that have the 9600XT name on if. Diamond viper, JetWay, whats the difference between them.

The amount of RAM is only one of the many specs to look at.

The R9550 is based on the RV350 GPU...it runs at 250MHz. The memory runs at 400MHz.

The R9600XT is based on the more advanced RV360 GPU...it runs at 500MHz. The memory runs at 600MHz.

BTW, you can run an ATI or nVidia card on that board...either will work just fine. In that price range though, ATI offers the better choice(s).

One more thing....

Usually, the memory used in 256MB cards of this type has a higher latency, which means it's slower. If you were to test two R9600XT's that where identical in every way except one had 128MB & the other had 256MB, the 128MB card would most likely come out on top. That being said, the difference wouldn't be major. Get whichever is cheaper.

I'm sure that the card you have should play Q3 easy. I have a 400Mhz Celeron with a 32Mb TNT2 M64 that plays it fine. I had a problem with my computer pauseing in games but I found out that it was a program that checked my ahrd drives and system temps every 30 seconds. Once I disabled it everything ran fine again.
