Specs: Windows Vista
I have read many other posts with the same problem and the answers are quite technical for me. I have also just received my computer back from gateway due to this issue, they replaced the thermal unit. Though when I watch youtube or play games on facebook the same problem occurs. The battery light will blink red (though plugged in) and it will die within a minute. My battery has never really held a charge, do you think replacing it would help? The computer doesnt get hot like it used to so I am not sure where to go from here. The next step for gateway was to reinstall the operating system. P.I.A.

If your laptop runs okay on mains power but not on battery power with mains disconnected, then there's a good indication the battery has come to the end of it's useful life.

A battery can only be re-charged a limited number of times before it needs replacing, and very often the battery isn't cared for properly. When using the laptop on mains power for a long time you are supposed to remove the battery once it's fully charged. Failure to do this shortens the batteries useful life.

A new battery is probably required, but if you do get one you should treat is described above. Also don't buy a cheap battery, get a genuine Gateway one. Will cost more but worth it in the long run. Cheap copies regularly fail, can overheat, and have even been known to damage the laptop.

Thank you for your response. The battery never held a charge for more then 9 mins, even right after purchase. But with what you're saying, I should take the battery out if it is plugged into the wall and fully charged?
