Screen fades out

Specs: Windows XP Pro SP1, AMD XP 2.0Ghz - 256MB

I have a MSI GeForce MX 440 64MB on an Asus A7V333 motherboard. When I start my PC the screen fades out and becomes black as if the PC does not want to start. But it does not happen all the times. Sometimes it does start and I can work for one, two or three hours [and even longer] and then the screen goes black again. I restart the PC and it starts up well [or it does not]. I can't really tell how long it takes before the screen goes black. Sometimes it happens instantly and sometimes after a few hours or less. I updated my graphic adapter drivers but it did not help. This configuration has worked well for more than two years and just now since two weeks or so I have this problem. After trying all this, I thought that it should be my graphic card that is damaged. So I bought a new MSI FX5200 128MB and after the installation everything seemed to be working. I restarted the computer a couple of times and then… same thing happened again. Nop, it was not my graphic adapter. Does anybody have an idea please what it might be?

Thanks for your help.

It sound's like the problem is your monitor. Test it connected to another PC and see if it behaves the same.

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice...
