Comment: Hi all. I posted on here about two weeks ago asking questions/ opinions about Widescreen monitors. I asked some tech questions, and then asked some opinion questions on different brand names, such as Sony, ViewSonic, and Samsung. During some Internet searches, I came across a name that I myself have never heard of before; it's called Sceptre. Just because *I* haven't heard of it doesn't mean anything, so I was wondering if anyone out there knows anything about this particular brand. Good name? Bad name? So-so name? I suppose one of the reasons I'm asking is because during an on-line search of various on-line retailers, I came across some of their widescreen monitors. And, I know that sometimes you can get a really good deal on-line as opposed to going to a retail store. But sometimes, when you see a "cheap" price, there's an old saying: You get what you pay for. One of the models I came across is: SCEPTRE X20WG-Naga Black 20.1" 5ms (GTG) DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1 Built in Speakers They're only asking $249.99. That seems really cheap for the size monitor that it is and the fairly impressive specs. But, sometimes - as I'm sure that many of you know - there are some companies that don't make the most "solid" of products. Their items may be "cheap", but then it goes back to the old saying: You get what you pay for. So, does anybody out there know anything about this company of Sceptre? Any personal experience with their monitors? Is it a quality monitor that you will get the most "bang for your buck"? Thanks for any tips, info, or suggestions. Pez

Reply: (edit)Hi, XpUser. Yes, that was the post! :-) That's where I got some of the tech info as well as some opinions on monitor brands. I was leaning towards Samsung, and had even seen a model of the 931BW (I think that's the model number), and this widescreen monitor of 19 inches has an aspect ratio of 2000:1 !! I had never even heard of numbers that high! It even has a response time of 2ms! But the thing is, I can't FIND that monitor anymore, anywhere, whether it be in a retail store or at an on-line retailer website. I tried writing an e-mail to Samsung, but it's been over a week with no response. I find that, sometimes, with "big" companies, that they don't always respond to e-mails, whether it be a tech question, product info/ inquiry question, or feedback question. Sometimes it takes a WHILE for them to respond, or, they don't reply at all. Sheesh! I'm interested in one of their products for purchase - I want to SUPPORT their company financially - and they don't even reply. It's like they're too "big". Anyway, I'm looking for opinions/ feedback on this Sceptre company. I don't want the company itself's hardline, their "pitch"; of COURSE they're going to say good things about themselves. It's why I came here to this board, to get some users individual feedback. Thanks! Pez

Reply: (edit)I don't know anything about Sceptre but I can tell you from what I know that no companies will waste their time writing back to someone who is interested in buying just one product. If you were buying in bulk quantity you no doubt will have their attention. I don't get it why are you still very picky. Life is short. i_XpUser

An aspect ration of 2000:1 means that for every inch of height your would have 2000 inches of width! Silly when you consider a wide screen TV has an aspect ratio of 16:9. Perhaps you mean contrast ratio which would be a bit more reasonable but still on the high side. As for a 2ms response time thats silly. 12ms perhaps and that is still fast. Stuart

Reply: (edit)Hi again. XpUser: I perhaps see your point in saying that I am only buying one product as opposed to "bulk". But, I don't get why you asked me why am I "still very picky". Why is ANYbody picky? Haven't you ever heard that people sometimes "shop around"? That they don't just jump at the first thing that looks good to them on impulse? Buyer's regret? A smart, informed shopper is one of the best consumers. "Life is short"? Yes, absolutely. Spend your time and money wisely. Some of us haven't got money to throw around (not that I'm implying that you do). And StuartS: Yes, I meant to type the words "CONTRAST" Ratio; my mistake. But no, that number is not too high. I've seen it on that Samsung, but now, like I said in my original post, I can't find it anymore (whether in a retail store or on-line retailer). And no, the "Response time" is not silly. Perhaps a year or so ago it would have been, but not now. Check out this web link of the Sceptre monitor I was looking at and then click on the "Specifications" tab: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ... Did you think I was making this stuff up? This Sceptre monitor has a Contrast Ratio of 1000:1, and a Response Time of 5ms. I think I've even come across some ViewSonic monitors with a Response Time of 2ms. So....anybody with any feedback on Sceptre monitors? Thanks! Pez

Reply: (edit)Take this with a grain of salt, because the last Sceptre LCD I bought was over a year ago. Sceptre sells value-line LCD products. Good bang-for-buck, decent performance, so-so build quality. They tend to feel a bit flimsy, and I've noticed that the backlight on the odd monitor isn't always a uniform strength (brighter in some parts of the screen than others). I would spend $40 more and buy the Samsung equivalent. "If it ain't broke, upgrade anyway."

Reply: (edit)I have bought 2 Sceptre 19" LCDs now and I love them both. Only problem i've had is one now has a single pixel that went bad so now there is this little itty bitty white spec. It's nothing you'd notice unless you were starring at a solid black screen, so, no worries. These were 800:1 Contrast ratio and about $189.99 when I bought them. Hope this helps. I would go for them. No trees have been harmed in the making of this message. But several electrons were very inconvenienced.
