I have a Gallery 4800 flatbed scanner, with Twain datasource software, v2.2i. This is my back-up computer, running WIN95 and is a Pentium 1. Have installed Twain, reinstalled Epson printer, have checked all connections, but scanner won't come on upon boot. During intial installation, scanner did come on, but I accidentally told Windows to find new hardware, which must have been a mistake, because now computer can't find the scanner to turn it on. Have changed parallel port to EPP. Any ideas? Thanks so much -have been pulling my hair out for 2 days.

Have you looked in Control Panel - Scanners and Cameras to see if you have two instances of your scanner driver installed, the second one not properly set up? If there are two there delete the second one.
(Scanners and Cameras may not be there if Windows can't see the scanner). It could be your scanner will only work in ECP mode, but I've never heard of that.
For what you need to know about ECP mode, and/or if you do not have two parallel ports and are using a switchbox (or a pass-through port), and/or if you have not looked for conflicts yet...........see the latter part of this:
http://www.lanyoncomputers.com.au/corner/threadview.jsp?post=5160&thread=3272e.g. when my brother used a switchbox in Win98SE he had to re-boot after switching it to the other device in order to get the device he switched it to to work, every time. A printer and web cam, in his case.
.........Other than that, do you have a manual for it?
Have you looked at any text files included in the driver download or in help files installed with the software for tshooting info? Was this a driver upgrade? If so, the FAQ for other Mustek scanners say you must remove the older software, possibly including the driver, before you install the upgraded driver or software. If that applies to you, you may have to use Add/Remove to remove the software you just installed, then attempt to remove the older software - if that doesn't work because some file(s) are not found, you may have to re-install the original software in order to be able to remove it.
Have you tried completely removing the drivers/application software and starting over? The software may have been thrown off if the printer port was not set to EPP initially - software is probably removable in Add/Remove, and/or through a Start - Programs entry. The device driver may not be as easy to remove, but you may not have to do that. Try removing it in Control Panel - Scanners and Cameras. If that doesn't help, look at the *.inf files in the original software to see if you can determine the name of the driver - often it ends in .sys. Or it is still installed search \Windows\Inf and \Windows\Infback and any other directory attached to them for an *.inf containing gallery.
If you have no install directions.......
Some scanner installs require you to install the software first, others require you to connect the scanner first.
Try at least whatever way you didn't try before. .

Thanks for responding so quickly. I did look through everything on the computer. There was no option to remove under the "Add/Remove Hardware" section, so I went through Explorer and found Twain and Twain 32 under Windows directory. Deleted both and reinstalled Twain with floppies. Still no scanner, and I can't determine where the driver is. The troubleshooter for the hardware and software is minimal and doesn't cover this issue. I do appreciate you responding, though. At least you gave me some ideas. Maybe I'll have to call out a Geek Squad or something. LOL Have a nice day!!!

You didn't answer most of my questions.
Please DO THAT, tell which of my suggestion you DID try. There may be nothing for it in ADD/Remove if you installed only drivers, but there should be something there if you installed applications that come with it as well
Is there anything there under Control Panel - Scanners and Cameras???
"....I went through Explorer and found Twain and Twain 32 under Windows directory. Deleted both and reinstalled Twain with floppies...."
That was foolish. How can you be sure those were installed by what you tried to install?
If you have any other thing that uses Twain -a camera, web cam, etc - it copuld have been installed by that.Twain drivers alone won't make the scanner work - they are so other applications can access the scanner, but the scanner driver must be properly set up - ones that can view and manipulate images. Often when you install a Twain driver those programs will then be able to Scan or Acquire an image in their menus somewhere, even if the choice wasn't there before.
What drivers are you using? Are they what came with the scanner? Are you sure you have the right one?
I searched on the web for them, but all the links I tried were dead.
........Something may be interfering with the install. This may allow he install to work properly.
Try this.Start - Run -
type: MSConfig (OK, or press enter)
click on the Startup tab.
disable EVERYTHING in the list. If it is not all enabled, make note of what is enabled beforehand.
Reboot.
Try installing the software for the scanner again.
When the install is finished, and after any required re-boots,
Start - Run -
type: MSConfig (OK, or press enter)
click on the Startup tab.
Enable what you want to enable.
