Hello! I am having an issue concerning my scanner, which is a Hewlett Packard Deskjet 3970 (My OS is Windows XP). I had bought my scanner in April and around June to save some space on my computer I recently removed some previously scanned folders containing scanned images onto a CD-R disk that was made by Fuji Film and has 80 minutes and 700mb on it (I'm just providing extra information so you'll know exactly what I'm talking about). The folders I moved included: 2004-04 (Apr), 2004-04 (May), 2004-04 (Jun), and 2004-04 (July). But when I wrote them to my CD I copied the originals folders that were still inside my computer. When I was finished I deleted the originals. As for the July folder I have two copies: one on the disk and one still in my computer; the one in my computer is the one that I'm currently using. Then whenever I would try to scan an image I would get error messages such as "The path HP Scanning software cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location (note: I have an administrator account on my computer) and try again or try to find the installation package HP Photo and Imaging 2.2-Scanjet 3970 Series.msi in a folder from which you can install the product HP Photo Imaging and 2.2-Scanjet 3970 series...when I click on okay or cancel the first message will pop back up again on the screen and the windows installer will try to install (which it seems unable to do so) or I get this error message: Error 1706 No valid source could be found for product HP Photo and Imaging 3970 series. The Windows Installer cannot continue. Please wait while Windows configures HP Photo and Imaging 2.2. But in spite of these error messages I was still able to scan items when I ignored them. Now I scan no longer scan an item although the lamp light in the scanner is on and when I click on the scan button on the scanner nothing happens, and whenever I try to scan a picture or document from the HP Director I get an error that states: "An error occurred communicating with the scanning device. Please ensure that the scanning device is connected properly and try again." I also receive this error message when I click on the settings button in the HP director. And on every startup of my computer even after the computer has been turned on my computer keeps telling me that it has found new hardware (note: I've had this scanner since April!) I've tried repairing the software with the use of the Hewlett Packard scanner installer disk that I was provided with but I keep getting this message that hpgends.tmp is missing and that I should type the path where it is located...I've tried finding this file from the disk but it doesn't seem to be there and I don't know where this particular type of file can be found in order to install it (I also was asked for this file when I tried to repair the scanner software). The software for the scanner should already be installed (I recently removed the T-Shirt creator...could this be a factor?) I don't know what the root of these problems are and what to do about them. When I was speaking to the representative on the phone I couldn’t understand what she was saying on the phone and she had a slight accent so I didn’t adequate help from the Hewlett Support Group. She something about something inside the scanner giving out that it was old but it couldn’t be because the scanner is only five months old. It seems like my scanner is having difficulty communicating with my computer so it doesn’t scan. Sometimes the scanner will turn on when I startup but I am still not able to scan anything (I am still able to view my Photo Imaging Gallery) I can only get the scanner to turn on when I turn the computer on and off through a power switch on the floor beside the left side of the computer. It would make the noise it usually does when it turns itself on when windows starts up and the light lamp would move up and down inside the scanner and then the lamp light would go out again. Before these problems occurred I was able to scan some slides but nothing else since. The rest of the scanner software such as the Image gallery seems to be working correctly I am still able to view previously scanned images. I don’t know who else to ask for help. Running out of options I have decided to unhook my scanner from my computer but I still have the scanner software installed. It will stay this way until either I can find a solution to this problem or I get rid of the scanner and the software all together. I’ve never used a chat room before and I hope that I posted this message correctly, if not please alert me immediately. Thanks!!!

For additional information my computer Manufacturer is Emachines and some other software that I have by Hewlett Packard is a Hewlett Packard Deskjet 820Cse for Windows Professional Series...other than being old and printing a bit slow my computer has not difficulty communicating with my printer to print a page so I can't understand why my scanner won't communicate with my computer...help would be greatly appreciated!!!
