If I want to use my HP scanjet 4C scanner, with XP, what scsi card would you recommend ? The cable I am using is a small connector 50 pin at card end, and 50 pin at the scanner end.I would try to find one on ebay, since I donot use the scanner often, and don't want to put much money on a card.Thank you.
hi,so here we are in 2008 and I still can't get my card to work with XP. My card is an Adaptec AHA 2920 Future Domain. I want to use my HP 4C scanner with this card. Right now I have had win98 install

No or little cost solution - you may just need to set things up properly........
If the cable you have plugs into the 2920 and the 4C fine............
See this - it's for older operating systems, but you still have to do the same things. The 50 to 25 and 50 to 50 cables and their HP part numbers are mentioned in this.
"HP Scanjet 4c Series Scanner - Using an Existing Non-HP SCSI Card on Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 computer"
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...If the cable you have DOES NOT plug into the 2920 and the 4C fine, find youself (a) gender adapter(s) that will adapt the cable to suit, or search for the proper HP cable (see the above for the part number).
..........I set up a 4C for a friend on a Win 95 computer and later on a different Win 98 computer. It was a very good, very expensive scanner when it first came out (when most people were still using Win 3.1), but's it's now ancient. He didn't want to part with it because he paid a lot for it. He's now dead - his relatives gave me the scanner and the computer he was using.
They originally came with an ISA SCSI card (XP does not support ISA SCSI cards), and a cable with a 50? contact Centronics connector (like for a parallel printer only wider) for the scanner end and a 25 pin male D sub connector on the card end (identical to that used on a parallel printer cable) that plugged into a female 25 "pin" connector on the card (identical to that used for a parallel port).
If you had to buy a new PCI SCSI card, it's not worth it unless you have other SCSI devices you want to connect to the card - you can buy a better USB scanner new for less than the card costs.
If you can't get your 2920 to work with the 4C........
You don't necessarily need a SCSI card with a 50 "pin" connector - the scanner does not require more than 25 wires be connected.
You could find a used SCSI card with a 25 "pin" female connector, same as that for a parallel port on a computer (D sub female) and find yourself a 50 "pin" to 25 pin (D sub male) adapter for your present cable, or find yourself a centronics to D sub male cable like it originally came with (e.g. search for: SCSI cable 4C, or see the above for the HP part number).
The original SCSI card was a version meant to be used for only one SCSI device. As HP says "The card cannot be used as a bootable solution."
If you can find a PCI one meant to be used for only one SCSI device, it will probably be cheaper (e.g. search for: SCSI PCI scanner card).I haven't looked for suitable cards for it in a long time - I'm not interested in using SCSI otherwise.
The 4P scanner used the same ISA SCSI card supplied by HP as the 4C - a suggested PCI replacement here:

The link no longer works - this is what they were referring to:

However, it has 50 "pin" connectors too.

It's a non-bootable card (no stock here) http://www.planetonline.com/TechSpe...

http://www.c-pro.com/products/lsil/...Because the 4C was a high end scanner, there is still lots of info about it, and lots of t-shooting info, on the HP site.
......"Right now I have had win98 install"
If you have card that works with the 4C in Win 98, another no cost (but some preparation required) solution is to make a dual boot computer - install Win98 first on a small partition and then XP on a larger one - boot Win 98 only when you want to use the scanner - you said you wouldn't be using it often.
