scanjet 3970 not communicating

Specs: Windows XP Pro V 2002 SP3, 4GB
Upon trying to scan a picture, document or make copies etc I receive the following error "an error occurred communicating with the scanning device. please ensure that the scanning device is connected properly and try again." I have done the following: removed scanner related software via the control panel and rebooted, download,
 installed and rebooted s/w, accessed regedit and removed the HP key under hkey_local_machine -> software -> hewlett-packard and powered down.  waited about 30 seconds and powered up and let the system find the scanner.  reloaded scanner software again to no avail.  the issue just started last week and no new s/w programs have been installed.  any suggestions???

A suggestion, Install Gimp or Photofiltre.

You might be able to aquire an image with Twain.

Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.
