(sigh)640g WD caviar blue SATA drive connected through PCI slot on a 10yr old Compaq...(GG). card and drive(was formatted NTFS) were installed and working as well as could be expected...Now, However, the SATA doesn't even exist. Card shows up in device manager. Of course- i have files i need on that drive...are there any hints to get files off that drive?

10 yr old Compaq? Geez, yer worse than me (6 yr old Compaq here).

Thats a SATA - PCI adapter? Did you try another PCI slot? Possible conflict somewhere?

I would try to test the WD 640 Gb HDD with WD's DataLifeGuard utility in another PC with SATA on the MB. If that HDD is good, it's either the SATA/PCI adapter, the PCI slot or corruption.

RE: getting the data off the SATA HDD, you could get a SATA/IDE/USB adapter (works with desktop and laptop HDDs) for ~ $20:

Just another stupid saying...

Have you looked for the hard drive in Disk Management?
