From what I have used, I see no reason in having a SATA RAID controller unless you intend on having a large amount of drives (ie - more than your onboard can support) or if your onboard controller is unable to run RAID or other things of that sort.
Basically, I'd say use onboard if it can support what you need, otherwise buy a controller card

Raid is not really an advantage for the normal home user. It's mostly used for large servers.

IMO, the biggest advantages one has over the other:
RAID controller card: Portability. You can take the card & drives and put them in a different computer without distubing your array(s).
Onboard RAID controller: It doesn't use up a PCI / PCIe slot.
