SATA not detected all the time

OS: WinXP Pro SP1
CPU/Ram: 3GHz P4, 512MB DDR

I have two hard drives, and one is connected the primary IDE and the other is connected to SATA (as a Third Primary Drive).

When I leave my computer off for a few hours, the SATA is not detected; only the IDE is detected. Restarting the computer fixes the problem, and as long as I don't shut the computer off for more than a few hours, the SATA stays detected.

What does that mean? I know it's not normal... Just wondering if there's something that's not set right, or that the drive is going bad?

Turns out that my hard drive was defective after all - I ran PowerMax and it told me the drive was a goner.
