Specs: Windows XP, 4gb
I bought an unused (new) 500gb Sata drive. It appeared in the bios, but was not initalized. I loaded up the Disk Manager and it appeared in there as uninitalized. So I right clicked and selected intitalize from the options. However, the computer just locked up. Tried it several times, same result. Any ideas? Or have I just bought a crook hard drive. Grateful for any thoughts on this issue.

If the drive was new then you need to partition and format it. How is the drive listed in Disk Management?

I missed this the first time. WinXP does NOT contain the needed SATA controller drivers. You need to install them and then hopefully after a reboot you can configure the new drive as described above.

We need to know the model of you computer or motherboard in order to direct you to the proper place to download the SATA drivers.

I had a similar problem with a WD drive, not initialised. I could see it in disk management but I couldn't initialise it.

I used the gparted live cd, I was then able to format it.

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.
