I bought a SATA WD 500Gig drive and Ext enclosure to use for more storage for my Dish network DVR. I started having trouble 5 mins after starting to use it & couldn't access drive, I hooked it up via USB2 to my XP machine & was able to delete and recreated the partitions. I then tried to format it but the format failed. This is my 1st SATA drive, I pulled the HD from the ext case and hooked it directly to my ASROCK K7V88 and the SATA controller message that flashes by during boot doesn't see it, just says no drive present for both connectors. I want to be sure I have a bad drive and didn't miss enabling something in the BIOS or a jumper setting that enables SATA etc. My OS's(dual boot-XP & Ubuntu) are on IDE drives, I am also assuming that you can have both IDE and SATA drives going at the same time.

Thank you,
Brad

Were you attempting to transfer large video files to the external drive. FAT 32 partitions have a file size limit. Exceeding that will yield CRC errors.

yes/no. When you hook up the drive the Dish network receiver formats the ehd w/some form of Linux. Then it allows you to transfer DVR'd shows to the ehd. as I was transferring the first show both the receiver and ehd locked up and I had to reset the Dish receiver. After that it said It needed to reformat the ehd, which didn't work, and I have been fighting with it ever since.

You may need to wipe the drive clean of any formatting before attempting again. A utility like killdisk would work.
