Hi
I'm pretty much new to SATA hard disks and some issues are left unclear.
-What is (the difference between) RAID 0 and 1?-Is is possible to setup a SATA hard disk (maybe the Raptor is it's price decreases) with the OS and a regual IDE for data storage? If so, what should the SATA disk be RAID 0 or 1?
-Is the difference between 10000 rpm and 7200 rpm really noticable?
-Is it worth the money over a 7200 rpm sata hd?
TIA

RAID 0 is where two disk are used to store data. The data is shared between the two disk thus speeding up operations as half the data is written to one disk and half to the other. There is no redundancy which means that if one disk fails, the whole lot goes. In this instance RAID is a bit of a misnomer.
RAID 1 Also uses two disks. But the same data is written to both disks so if one disks fails, there is the same data on the other disk. It is slower than RAID 0 as the data has to be written twice. Do a search on Google for RAID, there is loads if information all the way up to RAID 5.
You can mix SATA and IDE, however, for RAID you need at least two identical disks.
The difference between 10000 rpm and 7200 rpm will hardly be noticeable. The only time it will be is when you are transferring huge amounts of data in a constant stream as you would if you were doing video editing.

I asked just about the same question a while ago and got some pretty good answers...
OnTheHill provided me with this link to a site that explains all the different types of RAID...there's actually 10 different types..check it out...very helpful!!!
