Comment: I purchased a SanDisk cruzer mini 1.0 GB and it has been working fine. last week i downloaded some files off it onto a laptop. when it was finished i tried to download some files from the main computer onto the flashdrive. when i insert it into the usb port and try to look at it, it tells me "the disk in drive I is not formatted, do you wish to format it now. if i say yes, it says windows was unable to complete the format. i have tried it on more than one computer with the same result. do flashdrives just randomly go bad? thanks.

Reply: (edit)First, make sure you are formating it as FAT16. Do not use FAT32 or NTFS. If that still doesn't work, try using the quick format check box. I had an external USB drive that would give me the same error when I tried a full format but worked just fine with quick format.

Reply: (edit)thanks for responding. the format options under file system are FAT, but no other options available. I did try the quick format also, and got the same message that "windows was unable to complete the format". any other suggestions?

Reply: (edit)Try right clicking on My Computer, Select Manage, Under Computer Management then select Disk Management. Choose your 1 gig drive, Delete the partition and make a new one again then format it as FAT. If that doesn't help go to their website and see if there are any troubleshooting tips. Also check your warantee and that you still have your receipt. I believe some have a limited lifetime warantee. ASUS A7V8X AMD XP 2700+ 2.17ghz 768mb ddr 2700 nVidia 128mb FX 5200 WD 80gb SE DVD R/RW

Reply: (edit)Hello, I am having the same exact problem as the other person stated above. I have a SanDisk Cruzer Micro 512 mb. It was working fine until today. When i insert it into the usb port and try to open it up, I get the error msg "the disk in drive E is not formatted, do you wish to format it now?" if i say yes, it says windows was unable to complete the format. I don't want to lose anything on this disk. It contains important school files...etc. I tried following the instructions that you had given for the other person who needed help, however he has Windows XP, and I have Windows 98 so I was not given the same options. Please advise. Thanks, Scott
