Comment: All of a sudden when I put a memory card in my Sand Disk card reader the Windows XP camera wizard won't pop up. The little yellow light on the san disk and the hour glass flash for a second but the wizard will not come up anymore. I can go to my computer and open the sand disk drive there to get the photos but I would like to figure out how to get the auto detect working again or what happened. It's an older reader that was originally on 98 but when I got XP the san disk site said to try win 2000 drivers as they may work for some and it has worked for 1 1/2 yrs. until today. Here is what I have done so far and it has not changed anything. 1. Check the USB plug in on the computer, connection seems fine and green light on sand disk is on. 2. Rebooted computer 3. Tried a different card in the reader 4. Shut down, unplugged reader and booted back up. Hardware wizard finds it and install drivers. I had saved the win 2000 drivers on disk in case I needed them again but I have not gone on the site and gotten any fresh drivers yet. 5. Shut down and plugged into one of the USB ports on the front and hardware wizard comes up but still won't auto detect when I insert the card so I think my USB ports are fine as other things are having no problems. The only thing done to the computer recently was the zone alarm update, have added no new hardware or changed anything. Have all my windows updates, spyware is clean, maintenance run and all that good stuff. I have no clue what else to try so would like some suggestions on what to check further, thanks. Reply: (edit)I have the SanDisk SDDR-31 ImageMate compact flash reader. The only software that came with it was a driver. When I plug it in a windows opens up showing the files on it. To get anything else to come up you must set that up. What wizard are you talking about. You were kind of vague about that. I have PhotoSuite 5 that I got with my DVD burner. I have set up to open when I insert a compact flash. To do this I did the following: 1. Open My Computer 2. Right-click on SanDisk ImageMate drive icon 3. Select Properties in list 4. Select AutoPlay tab 5. Select Pictures in drop down list 6. For Actions select "Select and action to perform" 7. In Actions list select "Transfer photos and create albums using Roxio PhotoSuite" 8. Select OK Maybe you had some other program that was set up to open when you inserted a compact flash card. Maybe you can figure out what that was and set it up again. BTW, This SanDisk compact flash reader stopped working with Windows 98 after a while so I stopped using it for a long time. It works fine with Windows XP.

Reply: (edit)I didn't think I was vague, I stated the Windows XP camera wizard, is that not what it's called or something? You know in XP when you go to start, accessories the scanner and camera wizard that's listed there, that's part of XP right? I have had it from day one of setting this up out of the box. I also use it with my scanner instead of the supplied software. That XP wizard would automatically come up when I insert the card and all the pictures would have a green check mark by them and I hit continue or something and they would downlaod right to my pictures folder. It has worked liked this in XP from day one of install. This reader is 3yrs. old and was originally on a 98 computer and the san disk site said there were no XP drivers but said 2000 ones could be tried and they worked, have been working like I stated for a year and a half until today. The green light on the san disk is on but the yellow light and the hour glass only flash for a second and the XP camera wizard won't come up for some reason. Mine is called sandisk image mate model SDDR-09. Here it is on the sandisk site. SanDisk Happy AOL user for 5yrs.

Reply: (edit)Also I went to my computer and clicked on the image mate drive and under properties looked in the auto play tab. I clicked pictures and it was set right, the one that says copy pictures to a folder on my computer using the Micorsoft sanner and camera wizard, that's how I had it set up or rather that's how it set itself up before. I ticked that again and hit apply but it didn't change anything. Happy AOL user for 5yrs.

Reply: (edit)Sorry, I was unfamiliar with the scanner and camera wizard because I have never needed to use it. Playing around I found a different menu. 1. Open My Computer 2. Right-click on SanDisk ImageMate Icon 3. Select AutoPlay from the list 4. Select "Copy pictures to a folder on my computer using Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard" 5. Make sure "Always do the selected action" is checked at the bottom 6. Select OK This should force the Scanner and Camera Wizard to be used every time. It does for me now.

Reply: (edit)Did that, I stated that in the post above this one but I don't see it exactly the way you are saying. When I right click the sandisk I have to click properties then I see the auto play tab and in there I have a drop down that says music files, video, pictures and mixed content. I select pictures from the drop down and then I can tick select an action and I click copy pictures to a folder on my computer using the scanner and camera wizard and I click apply, have tried this several times with no luck so I am stumped as to what the heck happened. I think it has to be Windows doing this because the reader does work just won't autoplay anymore. Happy AOL user for 5yrs.

Reply: (edit)You misunderstand my directions. When you right-click in the icon do NOT select Properties. Instead near the top of the list select AutoPlay. It is a few lines down from the top. If you do it this way you will get a different dialog box than the other way. It will also have an option to force the use of the wizard every time you insert a compact flash. If this is not clear then look at these screenshots: https://home.comcast.net/~egkenny/images/ImageMate.jpg

Reply: (edit)I know what you are saying but I don't have auto play in the list when I right click. My sandisk is older so maybe that's why. Anyway you will be happy to know it's fixed. Ok I have not used the CD-rom at all since maybe Tuesday afternoon so the only thing I used today was the reader and since it didn't work naturally I thought it was broken. I decided to take a break and do something else on here and I put a CD of photos in I have accessed many times. Well, it didn't auto play but I could get to the photos from the D drive so that got me thinking and Put a boughten music CD in and no autoplay, put a game in that needs the CD to run and no autoplay so autoplay was not working period on the computer. I had a music CD sitting here that I think I listened to on Tuesday and I know it auto played then, I had a restore point for Tuesday so I did that and then the hardware wizard found the sandisk, installed the software and all autoplay is working properly now, sandisk and CD rom. I have no clue what could have happened. The only thing I can think of is Tuesday afternoon I installed spywarequard but that should't have done anything but something messed it up. What happens when I insert the card is the XP camera wizard automatically puts the pictures in my pictures folder. I like it this way as sometimes I have 200 pictures I need to dump but I don't have time to go through them in PSP or something so I stick the card in and come back later and there they are in the folder and then when I want to I can edit. I also have the HP office jet G85 all in one and the software for that is complex so unless I need to scan at a certain DPI I use the scanner wizard for a more quick scan. Thanks for all your help and I am sorry I did not think to check if autopaly was working in the CD drive, it never occured to me that autoplay was busted all over. Happy AOL user for 5yrs.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the article, fortunately the restore point fixed it. Don't know what messed it up in the first place since nothing was touched. Happy AOL user for 5yrs.
