My Samsung v25 laptop keeps freezing and i have to reboot to get it working again.

It seems to happen more frequently when the power lead is attached.. although the freezing does still occur when the laptop is just running off the battery power.

The above (together with the fact I formatted my hard disk and re-installed xp which didn't fix it) leads me to believe its a hardware and not a software problem. And, to be more specific, I believe its a problem with the power supply inside the laptop.

I recently had a similar problem with a Desktop (tower) PC... all I did to fix that was replace the PSU (power supply unit).

Do you think my diagnosis is correct? and if it is what can I replace inside the laptop to get it working normally again?

Yes, that does sound like a problem with the PSU.

NO this does not sound like an issue with a PSU! If the unit would just shut down completely I would say PSU but because your computer is freezing the issue is else were. First did you do a complete reinstall of the operating? Not just overwriting the windows core files. If you did do a complete re-install then have you ever gotten a blue screen when you booted the system up after the computer froze? In many cases on laptops it could be that the fan is no longer working. Next time the computer freezes make sure the fan is still spinning. I would also run a few diagnostics like memtest88. Memory issues can cause systems to freeze. This can be found at http://www.memtest.org/ or buy going to my site and there are a few hardware diag tools in the downloads area. Also make sure you have all the latest drivers for your system

I can't believe i didn't think of the fan myself!

I opened up the laptop to see if the fan was working and to my surprise there were three fans! 2 fans next to each other above the keyboard and one on the bottom of the laptop (under the keyboard)... only one of the fans (one of the 2 together) seems to work although doesn't stay on all the time... the other two never seem to spin although i think they may spin very briefly when the laptop is first powered up.

I am now pretty sure the problem is with fan(s) but have no idea which of the 3 fans should be spinning and when so I have no idea which (if any) need replacing!

Can somebody please help me with this?

To answer the questions in the above post... yes i did do a complete re-install of xp including re-formatting the hard disk and everyhing... and... yes i have had a couple of blue screen crashes but these are rare and nowhere near as frequent as the system freezes.

I also downloaded and ran the latest memtest software but it just seemed to be going on forever (about 2.5 hours) and i didn't understand what it was doing so i just gave up on it! What is it meant to do?

Is there some diagnostics software for fans? Will memtest do this?

i tried the memtest software again but once again it just kept running and running... i left it for 25 hours and it was still running so i just quit the program

is the software supposed to keep running like that? what is it doing exactly? and what results do i need to look at to diagnose the freezing problem?

ps. interestingly the pc doesn't seem to freeze or crash when memtest is running! in 25 hours it would usually freeze at least 25 times but it didn't crash once whilst memtest was running!

After being advised to check the system error log on another thread i found the 'DCOM' error appeared numerous times on the log.

After looking up the 'DCOM' error on the net I didn't think it could be that causing the system freezes so ruled it out, but, then another poster told me the DCOM error kept freezing online games on his PC so it got me thinking this may be the problem after all.

My next step is going to be to disable DCOM (haven't got round to it yet as I am at work) but after thinking about it I am almost certain this won't work as the system freezes also occurred before I re-installed XP (ie. they occurred before any system files had been installed and even whilst trying to re-partition the drive!)

I will try disabling DCOM but as I don't think it will work does anybody have any other suggestions?

As i suspected disabling DCOM didn't work.

Can anyone else help me to try and diagnose what is causing the freezes?

I still don't know how the memtest software works (it just seems to go round in a continueos loop!) so if somebody can explain this to me i would be grateful.

If the problem is hardware can anyone give me any tips on how to find out which hardware component is faulty?

please help!

I have a Samsung V25 also. The cpu fans (both of them) will only spin at the same time if its (CPU)too hot I think. The case fans spins when the system (motherboard) is too hot.
Try doing a windows sytem file check by going to 'Start>Run>then type "sfc /scannow" making sure your windows disk is in the cd/dvd drive. It will show a progress bar and take about ten minutes.
I have a question also. The LAN/RJ45 socket looks like someone has yanked a cable out and a pice of plastic is missing. I cannot connect througth LAN but can use a USB cable modem..does anyone think the mobo is knackered or can the socket be replaced..assuming this is the problem..Thanks.
Zac
