Specs: Windows XP
Motherboard on Dell XPS600 died a year ago. Now using Dell Dimension 9200. Was a backup computer I had for a couple years without much use. Today while hooking up Nielsen-based info scanner (scans bar codes) to USB, which I've done 1x/wk for 7 yrs, computer "blue screened" 3x. Restored it by "F8'ing" upon reboot. Hooked up scanner used to work fine on old computer, has been "iffy" on this one. Warranty ran out with Dell on this Dimension.

Drive C:/ is Samsung HD161HJ. Dell PCD Launcher hardware scan says the following (copied/pasted below) but no other program like Norton or Microsoft detects a problem with c:\

Other than when I run the Dell pcdlauncher the drive seems to be recovered. I'm not a programmer and i don't even play one on TV, just trying to keep myself sane in a crazy world. Thanks for any thoughts.

Norton and Msoft progs do not properly scan the hard drive for problems.
You need a hard drive diagnostic tool and these are run from a bootfloppy or CD.
This may be one that will work for you:
