I get "unreported" read errors from my Samsung CD-ROM SC-148A 48X drive. When I use a sound editor to look at some of the files copied from a Music CD to my hard drive I can see "drop outs" and I can hear the clicks too. I know that the CD is not the problem because I can read it without errors with the HP DVD writer in the same machine. Should I get my money back from Office Depot where I bought the computer?
Regardless of how HP may have things setup, the CD-ROM should be primary slave, the DVD burner should be 2ndary master. Use the Master/Slave jumpers when configuring your drives, do NOT use Cable Select.

Before you swap everything around, try just disconnecting the DVD drive and see if the problem disappears. If it does, then do as Jam suggests. If it still fails, you probably have a defective drive.
