Same ol' Windows XP, Slow as hell. Help?

Specs: Windows XP
As well all computers, when I first got it, it was fine.
Fast and all (well, to some degree..). Though when I first got it, it was pre-loved and running a somewhat unstable Ubuntu system. Which was later wiped and Windows XP was installed (after a complete crash and was sent off for repair) And since I've had to completely reinstall Windows (clean install) and/or repair the installation due to various errors.
After the first 1 or 2 lethal errors and complete hard drive wipe, it ran well still.

Nowdays however is another story, slow and sluggish all the way. I've browsed the net looking at similar problems and tried out a majority of the solutions, with no avail. The registry and hard disk are constantly cleaned of errors and scanned for viruses.

One thing of which I can thing of which what more or less the exact point where it started to run slower is whe I had yo uninstall and reinstall my vius removal program (PC Tools Internet Security 2010) as it wasn't function properly, and refused to update. After which, the program performed well as usual, the computer however, turned sluggish.

Since then I've installed and reinstalled the program, and went to the extent of yet, again, wiping the hard disk, and doing another clean install of Windows, yet with no satisfactory result.

Here's my system spec's

Total Physical Memory 256.00 MB

This is the culprit behind your ol' Windows XP, Slow as hell PC. The solution? Get more RAM up to the maximum your PC can support.

Ah, that's where another problem arises though.
At this point in time, I am unable to get more RAM. :/

Though, currently, my computer has less on it than it did when it was running fast. The last time I completely wiped the hard disk, deleted all partitions and whatnot, and did another clean install was just after Christmas, though apparently that didn't help..
