Is it necessary to click the "Safely remove hardware" icon before unplug a flash drive?In Win XP or Windows Vista or Win 7?

It is like looking in your wing mirror before overtaking, not absolutely necessary but a wise precaution to take.

You will get away with it most times but sooner or later you will get caught out. You will pull it out one day before all the data has been finalised and wonder what you device is unreadable anymore.

With a FAT32 formatted flash drive you can usually (but not always) get away with not using the safe removal icon. But it only takes once to seriously damage the file system and lose valuable files. But with NTFS formatted drives it is a virtual necessity. Not using the icon is asking for trouble.

Be aware that a flash drive is the least reliable of modern storage media and should not be trusted for long term storage of important files. You should always have another copy of important files.
