I'm getting a raptor SATA drive to replace main HD, and keeping my other 200gb HD. The only IDE Cable I have right now is set up for 2 hard drives (has 3 heads total). I don't have another cable on hand right now, and have no problems with this one, but I don't want the extra head dangling down.

Is it safe to CUT the extra head off at the base with a razor blade, leaving only the connection for the mobo and one hard drive (essentially making it a 2 head IDE Cable)?

I think you're cruisin' for trouble.

I would just tie it off.

There's nothing wrong with that in my opinion. I did it myself.

One word of warning. Make sure it's a clean cut. Any strand of wire left dangling to touch another wire will cause short circuit.

If having an end dangle is so bothersome, you can buy single connector IDE cables. BTW, when using an IDE cable that has 2 connectors, but you're only attaching one device, you should be connecting it to the end...not the middle.

I went ahead and bought one from SVC. I forgot they actually have reasonable shipping prices, unlike newegg :)

For the others who are thinking about chopping off part of the cable, it's perfectly ok to do that! Just don't leaver any exposed wire.
