Hi, I have a dell laptop with win xp on it...i was using dsl for over a year now and sharing it with my friends using a SMC router...recently i decided to buy a new router and got hawking (first) and then DLINK...but my laptop refused to detect it..although it was working fine for all my other feinds and was being detected...i changed cables/ports tried everything but nothing worked..i finally clean formated my laptop and reinstalled win xp thinking there may be soem prob..and then a strange thing happened..the router was detected and connected to the internet..(using the DLINK )..i thought that my problem was solved.BUT after i switched off the comp and restarted ..it was back to the same..didnt detect the router and says network cable unplugged...i have no clue as to what could be a problem.. the other behaviour that is encountered at times is that the router is sometimes detected and it connects/disonnects every second to the internet.. list of things tried..are 1.changing to new cables 2.changing ports on router 3.formating and reinstalling OS and drivers 4 trying with 2 new routers (hawking and DLINK)..both DHCP server enabled..so no need of giving static ips..although i tried giving static ips also.. :(..dint work 5.slowed down the link speed to 100 and also 10 mbps..dint help... so basically i have tried most of the things ..caled dlink support but they were of no help... The funny thing is after all this if i plug my old SMC router back ,...It is immediatley detected and internet starts working fine...i cannot understand this behaviour one bit. IF anyone has any idea of what i can do to get the DLink router to work with my laptopp please do let me know..btw ..i have an intel 8255x ehternet card(if this info is useul)...ur help is greatly appreciated..thanks

What settings are you using for the default gateway? I use an SMC, and it uses 192.168.2.1 by default. Some use 192.168.1.1. I know you said you formatted, but unless you low-level formatted, you'd be surprised what data the system "finds" and begins re-using.( I formatted after a Partition Magic fiasco and after re-instaiing MS Money, found that some of my bills and deposits info was there without having to re-enter)
