I have 2 RJ45 to DB9 adaptors. LIKE THIS ONE This page has a color code/pin order on it.

I have a cat5 terminated with an rj45 @ each end, (straight not null). I am going to use these adaptors at each end to create a straight rs232 cable.

The db9 has 9 pins and the cat5 has 8 wires. Which of the 9 db9 slots are not used? According to the link at the beginning of my post the 9th slot is left empty. I have probably visited 50 sites tonight and each site says something different. Most of the sites are talking about a specific cable for a specific product. I just want to make a straight rs232 cable using all 8 wires.

I know 2,3,5 are typically used for rs232 and sometimes 7 and 8. I once read a thread somewhere that mentioned a pin that rarely gets used anymore. Does anyone know which pin i should leave empty? :) Am i confusing anyone yet?

I have to make 20 of these adaptors and i will accept all the help i can get. TIA

Leave pin 9 unconnected unless your application
specifically uses RI.

I didnt use a serial cable because the electrician ran cat5 to multiple locations most over 50 feet away. I didnt want to try to solder to cat5.
