Hi The return key and delete key on my laptop keyboard appear to have stopped working. I ave been making do in the meantime with a USB keyboard. In theory, am I able to just remove the keyboard from the computer and plug a new one in to the motherboard? Difficult job or not?

it depends on the laptop. If you're carefull, and follow directions, it's something you can do.

Some Sony Vaio model. I guess I could find a compatible one as well and use that. Am happy changing hardware...I'be done this on various other bits and pieces before...
Is it possible it could be something under these keys preventing them from working and if so, it might be cheaper to buy an eBay replacement than fiddle about with each key individually?

Is the laptop still under warranty? Have you tried removing the keys to see if there is indeed something stuck under them?

Do laptop keys pop off like normal keyboards? I was under the impression they were more ingrained into it ?

Usually the problem is dirt between the pad that the key presses and the membrane. Not the easiest of things to deal with, but possible (on PC keyboards anyway).

Doesn't seem like it's dirt. I took the keys off and no issue with what's under them as far as I can see.
What models would be compatible with a Sony Vaio PCG-FR model ?

I don't mean that the dirt (perhaps contamination is a better word) is directly under the key itself. The key usually presses against a flexible cap, the underside of which makes contact with the printed circuit membrane. It's this latter electrical contact that I mean.
