Removing the hard drive and connecting to another computer will allow data recovery if the hard drive is functional.
Laptops have 2 1/2" hard drives, which have different connections than desktops. You will either need an adapter to connect internally or you can get a USB cable that connects to the drive. That should allow data recovery.

It's not likely, but 'possible' that the CD drive is causing the laptop to be dead. Try removing the CD drive to see if the laptop will boot.
