the HD died. unable to get restore CDs from HP because they require I pay by credit card. So, instead of restore CDs for XP will I be able to install Vista? This desktop is a Pavilion 763c, if that info is helpful. Thanks for your help.

Go to MSoft site to check on the minimum Hardware requirements for Vista. You will most likely need to buy a full retail version.

If you call these people they may let you buy without a charge card perhaps a Money Order.Usually about $35.00 and shipping.
