Sure, just make note of all the current setings that you deem important beforehand in case you need to re-enter them.

If it's an intermittent problem or if you have various symptoms, the chances of it being a bios problem is practically nil.

Check your RAM:
Doc memory tester

Check your hard drive:
Run scandisk `Thorough'.

Ok, I will do the reset, wotn hurt, I am not afraid of going into the bios. Have done several ram tests, all good. For a thorough scandisk on a 12gig drive how many days will it take? Ok, hours. LOL

Its not an intermittent problem. Have posted more than once in the forums, still cannot figure it out. May even just take a day and open the case, pull things out and put back in.

It would help if you explained what the problem is....

I'm not sure if you have an AT or ATX system, but it'd be best to unplug the power cord before resetting the BIOS. Use the ClearCMOS jumper or remove the battery...you only have to leave the jumper in place or battery out for a minute, then replace it, plug it back in, bootup, & immediately run through all the settings.

Hopefully you understand that by doing this, your date/time will reset & all the settings will reset to defaults. There will probably be quite a few things that'll have to be changed, so I hope you're familiar enough with the BIOS, otherwise you may make things worse.

Hullo jam. You and I ahve gone over the issues, I am just grasping at straws now. I probably do need a new computer which is fine, just cant right now. LOL

Is doing the reset on the mobo the same as resetting to defaults in the bios menu? Yes I will go thru and note down what I know are needed settings. Which wont be hard, been in there many times. Thanks.

I've just gone through your previous posts Robert. What it seems you want is us to tell you to buy a new computer.

ROBERT, BUY A NEW COMPUTER!

If you tell us what's wrong with the old one, you might be able to sell for a little more.

Start with the specs, then tell us what problems you are experiencing.

The issue I have is this. Say I am working in Word. I work in several documents, edit, whatever, close some, open others, then it happens. System hangs. Does not freeze, I can move the mouse, can bring up Task Manager. I can close some apps. But it always winds up needing a reboot. And at that point, the Wait dialog comes up but no file is named. I did check resources at this stage once and it showed 68% free. So I did free up some resources when closing apps. Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree.

I vaguely remember reading years ago about some motherboards having problems with more than a set amount of RAM. Although they could house more, they would have cache problems. As I said, it was years ago and my memory is a little foggy. Yes, incredibly by todays standards, it could be a case of too much RAM!

Another possibility is RAM faults. Ham told you in post 2 to check your RAM, did you?

This is a hardware forum, so we won't look at software problems yet. We're all aware of WinME's legendary reliability!

Rimfire, too much RAM? I have too much?! That would be nice. Hmmmm, ok. Yes I have run 2 or 3 different testing programs, the last one was memtest and it showed no errors.

On second thoughts, I think that RAM problem was something like 'more than 64MB EDO'. Your system isn't that old.

Memtest86 is a good program, if after several passes, it says there's no problem, we can rule out RAM.

In fact I'm ready to say, this is a software fault. Perhaps someone in the WinME forum might have a good idea.
