are you using the old hardrive oper system that was on the other motherboard?

If so that is why...

My theory is new motherboard new format or you are asking for trouble.

Try booting to your cdrom as 1st boot device with xp disk in and do a repair installation.

See if that helps...

Make sure that all the motherboard mounting studs are in the correct place and not shorting out the board.

Will is on the right track. An immdediate shut down is a sure sign of a short circuit.

Take the motherboard out and try running it on the bench. If that works then there's your problem. Check that you have spacers on the mounting pillars. The underside ones tend to be the most problamatic becasue you cannot see them.

You will probably need to do a repair install as suggested by Robbie, but you need to get the short circuit sorted first. The hard disk doesn't come into it until after you have got the POST bleep.

If your new motherboard has a different chipset than the old motherboard had it won't boot because the old manufacturer's chipset drivers can't find the chipset their looking for.

Before you do a motherboard swap there's a number of things that you have to change in device manager including changing the manufacturer's chipset drivers to the standard chipset drivers which XP provides.

Since you've already done the switch a repair install is your best choice as Stewart mentioned.
