Hi all,
Recently my laptop's fan started whining and screeching (if that makes sense) as if it's about to go. I have tried cleaning with compressed air but it did not help.

Does anyone know where to buy a replacement, and if it's even possible to replace?

Thanks for your help!

HP does sell laptop parts. First go to their website and see is there is a maintenance manual available for your laptop, for download. I did find one for a ZD7000 we had at work. The manual should have disassembly instructions, exploded parts diagrams and a parts list with part numbers. Then look up that part number on the Internet. Be advised, they may not sell just the fan. You may have to buy the whole heatsink/fan assembly. We had to do this with the ZD7000 and it cost about $90. The fans were proprietory, so you couldn't get them separately. You may be able to remove the fans from the new heatsink and replace the bad one(s.) That is what we ended up doing. This was because the manual told us we had to completely disassemble the laptop to replace the whole heatsink/fan assembly. I did not want to "chance" that.

I replaced the fax unit on a inspiron laptop year or so ago. You have to order the entire rear assembly. Download the parts manual for your unit and keep track of all the tiny weeny screws. It can be done successfully.

Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

Thank you both for the replies. I am checking on the manual and replacement now.
