what HDD should i get to replace old one on asus x58l notebook? Its to give to the girlfriend to use from fresh so i'll probably load the vista back on

Your laptop takes a 2.5" SATA HDD. Whatever capacity you want & are willing to pay for. Do you have a retail copy of Vista or a recovery disk?

its from the recovery disc that came with the laptop why? am i going to have probs? cheers for replying by the way. So have you any recommendations on hdd makes? or sites to get good deals. Ill pprobably go for as big as poss but i know i'll prob have to get some RAM too

Because it may not work. The recovery info is stored on a hidden partition on the orginal HDD. Obviously if you switch the HDD, you'll lose the recovery partition.

You can get a 160GB HDD for about $40 or up to 1 TB for about $120, with plenty of sizes in between. There are several brands to choose from but I'd stick with Samsung, Seagate or Western Digital. Have a look at Newegg or SuperBiiz. Right now, SuperBiiz has 10% off (up to $10) on all HDDs. Use coupon code SHOUT. The code is good until the 17th.

nice one cheers mate i'll check them out and i'll have a look into a workaround of the the recovery issue but not sure if those companies u mentioned will ship over here but i know a few that are pretty cheap
