How do I determine the correct replacement LCD screen for a broken Acer Aspire 5517 display?
Last January when I graduated from my university (and still had a job) I bought an Acer Aspire 5517 from Wal-Mart. Today that laptop was involved in an accidental overdose of gravity. The display screen is destroyed, although the rest of the laptop seems to be in one piece. It's working fine (so far) and I've got it tethered to my Vizio HDTV which is now my monitor.
I can't afford a new laptop and I don't want to pay $199 + Shipping to have Acer repair it if I can do it myself for cheaper. So my question is, if I wanted to get a replacement display, how do I know what I'm looking for? I've put together PC's before but never a laptop. Not even sure where I'd get the right part.
Help, my brothers?

Google is your friend. Look at the seach below. You may also wish to Google for a service manual. Try the Acer site first for that.

I tried that but then chickened out at the results. With my own experience I can not verify if any of those are the correct choice which is why I am deferring to this site's judgment.
Also, is there a way to order one from the product's manufacturer to avoid the middle man?

Well, if you want insurance then deal with Acer.

If you want to save money then you need to be proactive. Call or email the company you are considering and ask questions.

The link below is just one I chose from the first link. They seem to know what they are doing.

Buy with a credit card and get a confirmation the screen will work on your EXACT model 5517. Also, ask them if they have instructions on installing.
