Help! I replaced HD on 16 year old daughter's computer (4.3G) because there was no space and put in a 60GB HD. She cried and now hates me! She wants her photos, but the old drive is out of the computer now. Old HD had WIN98, new HD is XP home ed. She has computer at school now, so I can't access it to reinstall old HD as a slave. Can I put the old HD into MY computer (XP home ed.) as a slave, copy the photo files, then remove the HD? Thanks!

Yes, That should work fine. Just make sure you have the jumpers set correctly and the old drive should appear in Windows explorer under Windows XP.

Thanks for the responses...now, this jumper setting has me edgy. The old HD has no diagram for the slave/master settings. Can I just try plugging the slave into the "middle" slot on the cable in my machine? And will my XP OS be able to read the data on the old HD?

As far as buying her MORE stuff, included with the new HD upgrade was a new CD/DVD player so she can watch movies at school! (against the rules!) If I get her photos back, I'll be the hero. Thanks again. :)

You can try to find the jumper setings on the manufacterer's website, or you can try them all and c what way it's working, that shouldn't harm your system, and yes, XP can read Fat32 (the file system that exists on the old hardrive)
"Go be her Hero" :))

Nice daughter. You give her a bigger hard drive with a better OS and all she can do is whine about her photos?

The final step would be to copy the files to a CD and send it to her so she has the pictures. As far as asking for help on setting the drive up this is a good place if you run into problems. XP should not have any problems once you get past the BIOS seeing it.
Good luck

If you cant find the slave settings on the HDD just unplug the cdrom and plug it in there. Good Luck.

Turns out I'm not as dumb as I look (or as my daughter thought I was.) I was able to install the old HD into my computer as a slave and, "Voila", Bill Gates did the rest! Darling daughter loves me again. Not only did I recover her photos, I also found her Spanish music files that she knew were lost forever, but didn't complain about. So, loser Mom redeems herself once again. Thanks, guys!
