replaced hard drive and memory

Specs: Macintosh
i just replaced the hard drive and put new memory in a
5100 Acer laptop, the screen is black and I didn't get any
disks with the computer. How can I tell if the hard drive is
any good and why won't the screen light up.

Do one thing at a time.
Put the old harddrive and ram back. See if it will boot.
If so then just replace the ram and see what happens.
Are you certain the ram you bought is compatible?

As to the harddrive, if you are putting a new blank drive into the laptop what are you expecting will happen? Your operating system is held on the original drive. If you take it out you have nothing to boot. You say you have no disks with this laptop.
How were you planning to install an operating system to the new drive?

I know I have to put an operating system in, but I thought
the screen would have done something. I was just
checking to see if that is normal. I never replaced a hard
drive before, so I didn't know what to suspect.

It's my brother's laptop, he took it to a place and they told
him that the hard drive and memory went bad, so I
replaced them, once I replaced them that is when he told
me that he didn't get any disks with the laptop, but he said
that he did get the start menu before. If the hard drive
went bad, is there anyway to transfer the operating
system to the new hard drive
