My system is set up as primary drive 1 C: 40Gb, slave drive 2 on same controller 80Mb partitioned as D: 60Mb primary partition, E: 20Mb logical partition, containing Windows XP. The system is configured such that it boots directly into windows XP.

Recently my second drive (a Maxtor Diamondmax 9) has been playing up, just out of its 1 year warranty. I have cured the problem in the past by reimaging the partition from an image taken with Drive Image 7. However this time I ran the PowerMax utility from Maxtor and it reported the drive as failing.

I decided to get a new hard disk to replace the Maxtor and bought a Seagate Barracuda 160Gb 7200.7 drive as they have a 5 year warranty.

I also decided to buy a Promise ATA100 TX2 IDE controller card from eBay to run the drive from.

I have installed the new controller card and it works fine. Prior to attaching my new hard drive I took an image of the E drive containing windows XP.

I attached my new hard drive to the new controller and partitioned it as follows using Partition Magic 8.

60 Gb Primary, 20 Gb Logical, 80 Gb Logical

I used Drive Image to copy the 2nd drives partitions, Drive D to the 60 Gb partition and Drive E (containing Windows XP) to the 20 Gb partition on the 3rd disk. Windows Explorer shows a drive G: 60Mb, drive H (Win XP) 20Gb and drive I: 80Mb

I powered off and disconnected my 2nd hard drive, leaving the 3rd drive on the new controller. When it booted up it wanted to run a chkdsk on the G drive. When this had finished it brought up the Welcome screen with no user icons and hung.

My boot.ini is currently default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS

I then powered off and reconnected my 2nd hard drive as before, the system booted up fine.

I am unsure what the best way of replacing the 2nd drive and moving the new drive (ideally with more than 2 partitions) to the new controller is now. My next options to try are:

1) Create 2 partitions on 3rd drive, restore partitions from images of 2nd disk taken after controller installed as mentioned previously, disconnect 2nd drive and connect 3rd as slave to primary drive on original controller to see if this will boot.

2) Move 2nd drive to new controller, disconnect 3rd drive and see if windows XP will boot using new controller.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just go to Admin Tools and then Disk Management and you should see all your "drives" there. Click on the drive properties for a peticular drive/partition and just change it's letter to what you want it to be and apply it. Then restart the machine.
