Replace floppy drive with 3.5 hard drive

Gateway / E4300

Specs: Windows XP
Hello, I bought a fairly new gateway E4300,
which has a fast 3.2 ghz processor, but
includes a floppy drive and zip card drive,
which are both useless. Can i simply remove
them and install 3.5 " drives, I have the sata
connections on my power supply? The current
hard drive is a very small 40gb, so a new hard
drive would be great. As for the second empty
slot, I was thinking of putting a usb port there,
as the front usb ports don't work. Do they sell
3.5 " usb drives? Thanks

Floppy drives are not useless. You should have a bay or two down below the accessible drive bays to use for another internal drive.

As was discussed in your other thread your USB header may be dead. If that is the case where do you think you will connect the front ports? It is no different than the ports built into the case.

If you want more USB ports then install a PCI based USB card. Some examples are linked below. Read the reviews before ordering. That site is the best.

The computer has 6 working usb ports on the back, so a pci
card wouldn't help, i was hoping for usb ports in the front, for
convenience, but i can just get a hub.

A card can help if you get on with internal ports and connect a front USB facing to those ports. That is how card readers work.

Look at the link below plus the one provided above.

Before doing any of that get the manual to verify you were connecting to a USB header and the connection was made correctly.
