Remote Control codes

I have a 20" zenith TV/VCR combo unit. The remote is totally dead. I tried to use several different universal remotes, but none are able to reproduce all of the functions of the old one. I heared that I could take the codes out of the old one and transfer them into a learning one. Can this be done and, if so, how?
I haven't seen a learning remote in quite a while. But what you do is point them at one another. Then you go through a procedure to press the old remote button and then select the learner button to do that function. Repeat for each function. It's kinda time consuming.
