Comment:

I just got a new hard drive off my friend, it appears dead. When I plug it into my computer it makes no sound and is never detected. The hard drive is a WD Caviar 40 Gb hard drive manufactured in jan 2003 (would warranty still cover it?) and if not is there a way to refurbish a hard drive?
Thanks,
Pred.

supposely if the hard drive is made this year..it should at least have 1 year warrantly period..you can go to western digtial's web site and check your hard drive warrantly status

I'm with the Weasel. Here's the usual WD jumper settings list:

Only hard drive on the ribbon: no jumper

Master with slave present: short the middle pins

Slave with master present: short the next to rightmost pins

I think we should boycott WD because of their stupid plugging system.
