Reduce GPU fan noise?

I have an XFX GeForce 8600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16. This GPU has performed superbly and I would recommend it. However, I am aiming for a relatively silent computer and the fan makes an average amount of noise. I'm shooting for quieter than average.
What can I do to make the GPU fan quieter without damaging the graphics card? The case has average ventilation and I believe the GPU runs at 47°C and the CPU at 56°C during normal activity.

Wow, I'll try something like that for my next build. My current case and motherboard, though, don't have the space for equipment that size.

Anything that cools passively will be big, your best bet might be to find a quieter replacement fan, otherwise, if your good with a soldering iron, you may be able to place a small resistor on the active line.

How do you rig up a passive cooler to a graphics card that already has a fan on it?

You have to remove the current cooling solution and replace it with the passive one. The stock cooling system on the 8600GT requires active cooling, ie. a fan. A passive cooling system substitutes the fan with a large surface area to aid heat dissipation, hence the bulkiness. If your not into gaming, perhaps you could get away with a less powerful GPU, like the 8500GT, that generally ships with a passive cooler as standard.
